Best Honey for Tea, Coffee and Warm Water (and How to Add It)
For millions of Indians, the day starts with honey: in warm lemon water, green tea, ginger tea or a cup of coffee. But not every honey suits every drink. A delicate honey can disappear in strong chai, while a bold one can overpower green tea.
Here is how to match the right honey to your cup.
The one mistake to avoid
Don't stir honey into boiling-hot drinks. Very high heat dulls honey's delicate aroma, which is the very thing that makes good honey worth buying. Let your tea, coffee or water cool for a minute or two until it is comfortably hot to sip, then stir the honey in.
Honey pairing guide
| Drink | Best honey | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Warm lemon water | Kashmiri Acacia | Mild and clean; lets the lemon shine |
| Green tea | Kashmiri Acacia or Lychee | Light honeys don't overpower delicate tea |
| Masala chai | Himalayan Multi-Flora | Rich enough to stand up to milk and spices |
| Ginger or herbal tea | Fennel | Herbal notes complement the infusion |
| Black coffee | Himalayan Multi-Flora or Mustard | Rounded sweetness without masking the coffee |
| Iced tea and mocktails | Lychee | Fruity and fragrant |
| Haldi doodh / warm milk | Ayurveda Blend or Himalayan Multi-Flora | Warming and comforting |
How much honey to add
Start with one teaspoon per cup and adjust. Honey tastes sweeter than sugar to most people, so you often need less. Lighter honeys like acacia are milder, so you may want a little more.
Tips for a better cup
- Use a dry spoon so no water gets into the jar.
- Crystallised honey is fine in hot drinks; it dissolves as you stir. (Here's why honey crystallises.)
- On the go? Keep a few 10g honey sachets at your desk or in your bag: one sachet is roughly a generous teaspoon or two.
